You begin your training as a topman, supporting the crew from ground level by shoveling, compacting soil, and signaling equipment operators. As you gain experience, you progress to the role of tailman, working directly in the trench to assist with pipe alignment and connection. Safety is paramount in this role, especially when working in trenches and excavations, requiring strict adherence to safety protocols and a constant awareness of potential hazards. You will handle materials, move tools, and ensure the trench is properly supported to prevent cave-ins.
